Sweetwater Country Club 7:30 Am

My my, Summer is upon us and many of our clubs in the area are attempting to improve their facilities. This club is no different. Our competitors are met at the proshop with the notification that holes 1,2 4 and 15 will be temporary greens. DO THEY NOT KNOW this is a regular stop on the CW Cup Tour. Clearly we have had a breakdown in our communications that can only be the responsibility of the Founder/CEO/Grand Poo Bah/
C double U himself. Yet our tournament hardened vets proceed on.

Today the 1st tee will actually be the 10th which Lou does an excellent job in paring bogies and doubles by the other guys and off to 11. The Mann being on his home course knows just where to place an errant tee shot so no penalty would be had. This by the way was a point of discussion from the boys in the other cart for the next 4 hours. Let the record show it was in an area marked (with a white line (ground under repair) not a brown or red or yellow stick). FYI only CW sees Brown sticks on a golf course. USGA has been contacted to find out what kind of marking that would signify. So on with the match. The boys all scampered along this par 5 to see again a lighting fast putt by Lou go in the hole. On to the 12th and Lou smacks another great drive and on the green in regulation but a very long sweeping down hill putt will be very hard to get close. He does not and has a 12 footer side hill putt for par. Meanwhile Greg who also hit a great drive, sticks his second within 3 feet and looks like he will have a birdie. Lou takes dead aim and rifles another speedy putt that is gobbled up by the hole. I say, we have never seen such an show of putting on the CW. Greg is happy to get his par and not lose any strokes to Tin Cup.

On to 13 and CW is long and straight over the hill he hits a great second shot on to the green but 3 putts to tie JR and Lou, Greg falls one back. 14 was greeted with great drives by all followed by good shot making the length of the fairway by CW. He would go on to record the only par and gain a stroke on Lou but Lou is still playing strong against all competitors. 15 has that temporary green yet both CW and Greg manage to tame it with pars. Seems JR has left his putter at home today. 16, all 4 shared bogie and on to what looks to the eye as a very simple 3 par. Not so my loyal readers, it has danger everywhere and this group can find danger anywhere. Cart path edges drive balls OB. Thin or thick 2nd shots miss the green only. The Mann records a bogie today. The boys follow each other into the rough on the left side of a very lovely fairway. Balls were flying off trees and into sand traps and when it all ended Greg and Lou recorded bogie's, Chuck an 8 and JR from the bunker into the water walked off with a 9. Ouch. At the turn Lou is leading Greg by 3 who is in front of Chuck by 5 and JR is following him by 2.

The back which today is the front (does this make since to a non-golfer?) provided JR with one of only a few wins today as he bogied the hole. 2nd saw CW secure a par which he quickly followed up with another on 3rd hole. Greg pared 4th hole, thank you Lord, no more temporary greens. He parred 5th and turned to JR and said I think I can see Lou up ahead. That is not a good thing, when Greg gets focused he performs and so the battle would rage between Lou and Greg for 1st and 2nd and CW and JR for the honor of buying lunch. Lou performed well matching Greg till we came to the 8th Tee box. There Greg launched a high ball to the right side of the green in the rough. He stood motionless for what seemed like 2 minutes waiting to see if it would be long enough and it just was. So now Lou has his opportunity, leading by one with 2 holes to go he can feel it. It is a 175 yard carry over water and it clearly is in his bag but it does require hitting the shot. Today, Lou's demons help him launch the ball across the street OB. That requires that he hit another from the tee. That would count as number 3 and it landed softly on the green about 30 feet from the pin. So Greg has an opportunity to not only tie but take the lead if he can get up and down for par from 20 feet. Can you say NOPE. He chips it just off the green and then two putts for bogie while Lou scores 5. On to the 18th both players tied. Regarding CW and JR, CW hits a great drive over the bunker and a chip and two puts later scores a 4. JR took an unplayable and scored a 5. The 9th hole at Sweetwater is a great finishing hole. Requires a good drive followed by a good second shot. That's what somebody forgot to tell Lou. His second while well struck hit a branch only 20 yards in front of him and dropped back to the earth. Greg went on to record a Par, CW a 6, JR a 7 and Lou an 8. Let the record show, Greg with a 90 is in a strong position with another win followed by Lou, 3 back. CW trailed Lou by 4 and JR was 5 back of Chuck. On to Errol Estates next Thursday.
