CW event #7
February 27th, 2008 8:40 PM

The Seventh contest hosted at RHGC 2/27/08 moved a day earlier due to near freezing condition forecasted for the morning. The boys got a late start at 2:45 in cool windy conditions. All three contestants had their individual par moments or opportunities and after 7 holes a one shot lead separated the top two. Then came number 8 and the lead ballooned to 5 and would stay that way to the 10th tee box.

Jim tried to give it all away but all three played 10 terribly so Greg pulled within 4 going to the 11th. Jim and Chuck found the green yet Greg was able to generate a bogie with a great chip shot to lose just one stroke to Jim. On to 12 where Chuck found the water twice but eked out a great snowman. 13 enjoyed 2 pars by Greg and Jim and then on to what we can only be called Greg’s turn. That’s right from 13 to 15 these three holes have been dominated by Mr. Mann and as he has in the past he did so today. Changing a 3 up lead for Jim on the 13th tee box to a 2 up lead by Greg walking off the 15th. Yet Jim was able to pull to within 1 as they strolled to the 17th tee box. Greg extended his lead back to 2 with a great chip followed by a slippery downhill put for par. The 18th was note worthy in the since that Charlie Williams played it very well hitting 3 great shots to the green and then had to use that DREADED PUTTER and we all know how that turned out. Yep 6 was recorded.

So the match will forever sit on the Greg Mann side of the ledger with a 3 stroke lead. That puts him in the tie breaker lead by 2. And the game goes one. Success to all that read this in 08.

6th contest of the CW cup
February 22nd, 2008 4:03 PM

Week 6 of the chase for the CW Cup found the boys at Sweetwater Country Club a 7:15 Tee time had the name sake crying the blues and promising retribution to the Mann. None the less the contest began with Greg and Jim sharing bogies at number one while Chuck

Took a 7. The second found Greg registering the same number Jim had here the last time. Yes a 12 and the air went out of his sails yet he played on and walked off the 8th hole with a par and only down by 4. Chuck won the 9th hole with a 7 and off they went to number 10. All drives where in trouble and Greg and Jim shared 7’s as Chuck moved another stroke closer to the leader. The 11th hole has had its way with our warriors but all three started off with good drives. Chuck then hit a huge 5 wood to within 145 yards of the green. Greg lofted a great shot out of the fairway bunker and then a 3rd shot to within 70 yards of the pin. Jim trailed the boys but his fourth found the green and he managed a bogie for the first time ever, and that propelled him to a 4 shot lead. He garnered another stroke on 13th before falling back to the field a stroke on 14th and 15th. All three shared 7’s on 16 so they arrived at 17 Jim up by two with 2 to go. Chuck hit a great 5wood to within 10’ of the pin missed the birdy put but made par. Greg and Jim boogied. On to the 18th, Greg down two had to attempt an aggressive shot and found himself in jail on a thin lie under the trees he bunted out and then found the water for a 6 Jim and Chuck recorded 5’s for a 3 stroke win for Jim. Next match is Thursday RHGC at 7:32.

Match 5
February 14th, 2008 8:00 PM

Round 5 was held at Rolling Hills 2/13 7:40 Temp. high 30rds.

The contestants arrived at the tee box only to have a group of wanna be golfers 3 Foursomes attempt to command the Tee box. Our competitors would have none of this and after a brief skirmish teed of in front of the wanna be’s. The first hole was a cluster with Greg’s ball in an unplayable lie behind a tree ( still scored bogie) and Jim and Chuck in the rough over 170 yards to the green, Greg walk off 1 with the lead. Yet he came back to the field on 2 with ob action. The weather had a lot to do with the poor play on the front as Jim made the turn with a 5 shot lead.

The 10th provided the best shot of the day for Mr. Charlie Williams as he hit a great driver the nuked a 5 Iron inside 100. Followed that by airmailing the green. Yet he was able to hit a great shot with an encumbered swing to 7 feet from the pin. Put was short and he walked off with a 6 which tied Greg. Jim on the other hand choose Charlie’s golf mind set and attempted a shot he has no business attempting and ended up in a bunker for 3 strokes. That’s right he walked off with an 8 giving back two strokes to the field. 11 Chuck closed on the leaders with another solid play. Greg found water on 12 but still scored a 6 with a great shot across the water. He then went on a tear with pars on 14, 15 and 16 to tie Jim. Jim pared 17 to take the lead and both boogied 18. Chuck on the other hand created his own moment in history with a Par on the number 1 hardest hole in Rolling Hills. Congrats to him.

In summary Jim wins by 1. He leads with 3 to Greg’s 2 . Greg has tie breaker by 3 strokes. Charlie has 3rd locked. Match # 4 of the coveted CW Cup
February 8th, 2008 4:44 PM

Dawn arose and Charlie Williams drove to the contest with the intention to garner his first win in the quest for the CW Cup. Yet in his bag sat the Dreaded Putter. Yes I know a Dreaded weapon usually strikes feat into your competitor. Not so unfortunately for our friend Charlie. He was able to spot the entire field 25 strokes with that weapon alone. We believe his putter and 3 Wood deserve some serious “Time-Out”.

I degrees, on to the contest. Jim jumped out to a commanding 3 stroke lead with a par on the first hole only to go down 2 to Greg by the end of the 2nd. Greg was solid until he arrived at the home hole. There he was able to hit the trees, hit a root end up out-of-bounds, chile dip, fly over the green and one-put all that and only lose 1 stroke. You got to love this game. He recovered nicely on the next hole and the boys bounced the ball all around the 7th hole with Jim and Greg leaving the hole tied. Chuck and Jim found the water on 8 so Greg had a 1 shot lead on the 9th tee box. Chuck chose to attack the right side of the 9th fairway and paid dearly with a 10 while Greg and Jim boogied.

On to the back nine, everyone was everywhere on 10 and 11. Jim took the lead on 12 with a par put. Then Greg pared 13 and 14 boogied 15 pared 16 boogied 17 and 18 and was not to be denied. He won by 7 strokes. He has tied Jim in number of wins but leads the tie breaker by 4 strokes.

Note1 He also beat Lou Buttice (who the boys are considering adding to the contest in the 2nd half).

Note2 Last week we referenced we would play AT&T rules. That is only in regards to the rolling the ball in the fairway. The double par plus 1 was not accepted as Jim recorded a 12 and Chuck two 10’s today.

Match #3
February 1st, 2008 3:33 PM
Game ON: Feb 1st Rolling Hills established that Greg is THE MAN in more ways than one.  He came out firing as all three players played a strong front nine but Greg was in control with pars on 1,7 and birdie on 4. To take a 3 stroke lead over Chuck.  The back nine was equally competitive with Jim drawing within 2 strokes by the 11th. All three blew up on number 12 recording 2 7's and an 8. Greg grew his lead with another birdie at 15 to 5 strokes. Yet the golf Gods where not ready to smile on our favorite Brit. His 8 on 16 and Jim's 4 narrowed the lead to one. Leaving 17 it was all square as the rain began to fall the boys tee'ed it up on 18. Greg smashed his drive over to the 17th tee box and then had his 2nd shot knocked down by a tree. Chucks 3rd found the side of the cartbarn and he had to create quite a shot to get back on to the fairway. Jim's 4th onto the green was high and looked soft enough to hold the green but slid into the back bunker. Greg chose a bump and run to position himself above and to the right of the hole in 4. From their he successfully found the hole for a 6 while Jim and Chuck scored higher. The Mann recorded a 2 stroke win for the event.  It now stands at 2 for Jim 1 for Greg and Jim has a 3 stroke advantage in case of a tie.  We also confirmed today that we are Playing AT&T rules.  i.e. a pick up will generate a double par plus 1.   We are allowed to role the ball if on the fairway only. Next Friday Feb 8th we will begin again at Sweetwater.
